bauMax fosters contemporary art. Within the context of the Essl Museum and the many diverse activities in which it engages we afford both our employees and a broad public an opportunity to experience art as a source of strength in every-day life.
The founder and current chairman of the Supervisory Board of bauMax, Prof. KR Karlheinz Essl and his wife, Prof. Agnes Essl, have been collecting contemporary art for over 30 years. In November 1999 the Essl Museum opened in Klosterneuburg, just outside of Vienna. The collection has since grown to over 6000 works of contemporary art and is one of Europe's most important private collections. It is also the most significant collection of post-WWII Austrian paintings.
In November 2003 renowned art magazine ArtReview ranked the collector couple among "The Art World's Top 100 Players".
